For those interested, this is where I'm living. (Well, technically just outside of the triangle I guess.)

Sparkytown, the LGBTQ-owned eatery mentioned in the article, seems to have since closed. That's too bad; I would have checked it out. [livejournal.com profile] restoman, has anything taken its place? Where are the fun local diners and things? I probably can't afford to go to any until I get paid, but once I have a little extra money I want to go to the local places!

Achievement unlocked; acquire microwave! (See, even I'm doing that 'achievement unlocked' thing now...)

Picking up my Microwave

After a trip to campus to meet with my advisor, I biked over to Westcott to buy a microwave from another student. I'm so glad I got this trailer a while back. And that Robert Allen convinced me to find room for it in the trailer.

---

The talk with said advisor went just fine. We talked about the city and how I was finding it. We talked about grocery stores and restaurants. We talked about gender. We talked about weather and he gave me a copy of his book on lake effect snow. We talked about politics, crazy Republicans, international economics, climate change, and nuclear war. I talked about some of the things I'm interested in studying, as well as when I should get started on my RA duties (in a couple of weeks, before classes start). He suggested I drop by the department library and look at some previous masters' theses on topics I'm interested in. We talked a little bit about transportation geography.

So I'm relaxing a bit. Things are ok.

I started reading, got sleepy, and took a nap. Now that I'm up, I'm going to walk the half-mile to my nearest Rite-Aid. I need a clip fan for this bed; it gets quite warm up in that loft!

The three-quarter-mile walk to the Rite Aid leads me past a medium-sized park and cemetery, as well as a corner store with a name in Arabic script. Maybe I can get Turkish delight there! The Rite-Aid is on the same corner as a Dollar General, a Family Dollar, and a Burger King. It's double dollar corner! Regrettably, the two former were already closed, 'cause I could use an extension cord for this fan!

The neighborhood seems to be partly Spanish speaking. It's dark, and there were a lot of people out on porches or walking around. I'll have to walk or bike through it during the day and see what kind of impression I get. But as far as distance, that's not so bad. I'm looking forward to doing a lot of walking and biking here.
