Shelter Day!
Jul. 28th, 2016 10:42 pmThere are two German Shepherd Dogs, or at least Shepherd mixes who take after that side very strongly, at the shelter now. Bella, a sweet, elderly dog with hip problems, is in the kennel next to Steven, a darker dog who has the purple-pink tongue of a Chow. I helped give Bella and Mimi, a tiny little long-furred dog, some of their medicine. Then I walked Brooklyn, the frenetic little terrier again.
It looks like I'm going to be on "Team Brooklyn", a group of one volunteer per shift who are working to socialize her more. I may end up walking her across the street to the Pet Smart to give her a chance to get used to a wider range of environments, people, and animals; that could be fun! There's a big, short-hair dog of a breed I'm unsure of named Simba who I tried to walk, but he immediately shied away from me when I tried.
Two dogs made me want to just hold them and cuddle them for hours. Mimi crawled onto my lap and buried her head in my arm, quivering. She's an owner surrender, though I don't know any details. She must be terrified. Similarly, Ziggy, a good-dized pit-mix and another owner surrender, stands and howls in his kennel if there are people around, asking for attention.
I asked about coming in on a day that isn't my normal shift to photograph the dogs. That should be doable if the shift captains are ok with it, so maybe I'll have some doggie photographs for you at some point!
