stormdog: (sleep)
I'm not very good at being aware of significant stress. I'll often feel significant anxiety and worry but don't know why. I have unexplained, 'free-floating' anxiety often enough to start with that it doesn't seem remarkable other than being more intense and disruptive to my activities than usual. Maybe that's why I often don't think about connecting it to a particular source; usually the source is just whatever normal things are always happening plus bad brain chemistry. Eventually, it might occur to me that the connection between some stressor (or set of stressors) and a significantly heightened level of stress is not just a coincidence. Amazing!

I found out yesterday that my dad's in the hospital in Kenosha. It seems like he's stable, well, and improving, but I'm going to take a half day at work today and go visit. That plus Danae's potential new job and related move, and thinking about how much there is to do to be ready for such a thing, raised my stress to a disruptive level yesterday. That means that I didn't do a lot of cleaning, which means I'm more stressed and feel more behind on having everything organized. Vicious circle: see circle, vicious.

I expressed to Danae that I felt like I hadn't gotten anything much done this weekend and she told me that I took very good care of her this weekend, and that is a very important thing. That made me feel a lot better; something she's pretty good at.

Someone just checked this book out of our course reserves section. It's one of those thousand-page doorstops that are big even for med school. "These can go out for four hours at a time, I said, "so you'll have to read pretty fast to get through it."

On Saturday, Miriam was watching a cartoon on Netflix that was interesting enough to grab my attention away from Factorio for spans of time. Something called The Dragon Prince. There are *so many* nifty things in there, character-wise.

Two that really made me happy were:

*A female high-ranking military officer (a general or equivalent maybe?) who is mute, (and possibly deaf? I didn't catch that) speaks in sign-language, and does not have patience with your bullshit.

*A story about a three-legged wolf who was given an illusory leg. He could get along just fine on his own, but people couldn't help but assume he was disabled by his appearance. The illusion was to overcome other people's false expectations about the disability.

These things both make me so happy! And the show in general has pretty decent writing. Interestingly, some of the animation looks oddly similar to Ralph Bakshi's style, even though it's supposedly all computer animation.

I get goofy sometimes when I'm stressed too. Someone just asked for a particular book that we have a bunch of for certification classes. She said she needed that little blue ACLS book, but it's actually red. I got one for her and said that, while it was actually red, if it approaches her quickly enough, it might appear blue. Or is that the other way around? I forget which way the spectrum goes....

Red has a shorter wavelength, so it would have to recede from her quickly enough to appear blue. That's it.
