As far as I can tell, the latest drivers for Eeyore's motherboard, the ABIT KF7-S, will not work and, in fact, crash my system. I was finishing up my 2K install and figured I'd update with the latest drivers; suddenly, Windows wouldn't boot. After trying safe mode and last known good configuration, I bagged it and reinstalled Windows. After that, the first thing I did was put WinRAR on the new 1GB USB drive that I picked up during Wuffmeet, along with with the install package for DirectX 9 (required for the mobo drivers) and the driver install package. After installing in that order, the graphics completely freaked out and I couldn't recover. I'm reinstalling again.

I think I'll just stick with the drivers that came on the CD, thank you. I'm kind of nervous about trying to update the mobo firmware at this point too; if that goes awry, I may not be able to recover....

The computer room is almost completely organized! I even got the Lexmark 234 that I brought home from work set up on my little HP print server and installed on my DC so that [livejournal.com profile] wooisme can use it. I'm caring piles of random stuff to the basement, and a few things to the front door to take to work so I can dispose of them via the bulk collection there. Yes, there are some perks to working where I do that I really appreciate; not having to pay someone to take away my mounds of aging hardware is one of them.

I have so much workbench room, not to mention a computer that I'm working on turning into a game machine, if I ever manage to get Windows 2K fully set up on it; so, who wants to have a LAN party? Seriously! I missed out on the one my parents do since I was at Wuffmeet, so I want to make up for it. How 'bout it?

I finally have access to a Sharepoint environment at work; about time! With that in place, I'm going to table the idea of setting it up on my own server. If I want to work with it, all I have to do is VPN to work and there ya go. Instead, I'll look into doing eGroupware here again. Hey, the rate I'm going, maybe I'll have the skills to look into moving into a sysadmin role once we open a NOC at my office, or even look for a job doing something on that order closer to home. I hear that there's an Abbott research park opening up near Kenosha that's going to be huge.

EDIT

So I reinstalled and the video went apeshit again. After a short round of profanity, I realized that the graphics glitchiness was similar to something that happened with one of the versions of the driver for my Blade card. So even though I had it sitting in there disabled, I physically uninstalled it; voila! All better! Which means that I probably didn't have to reformat the drive and go through the whole reinstall process after all. *sighs*

I'm going to try and isntall the newer mobo drivers again, this time without the secondary video card. I also removed the SCSI card I had in the box. I weighed the pluses of having it in there just on the off chance that I want to connect a SCSI device someday against the pluses of selling it for fifty bucks on Ebay. Guess which one won?

I'm probably going to bed soon. More this weekend. Thanks for putting up with my tech blather.
