Windycon was a good time. It's nice that [livejournal.com profile] unclevlad asks Andrea and I to work ops; I get to see the rest of that crew who live a bit too far away to see terribly often, and it's a good way to be a part of the convention in a capacity that I can manage fairly well. Ops is, most of the time, a pretty quiet job. It's sort of like working help desk in a way. People ask you questions, and you tell them the answer, tell them who can help, or tell them they have to figure it out for themselves.

I didn't see a whole lot of the con. Maybe I'll see more at MFF since I'm not working it. I wanted to shoot pictures at Windy's Critter Crunch, a home-brew robot fighting event, but didn't make it out there. I did, however, make it to the masquerade. I even postponed eating the fresh-from-the-delivery-guy chicken alfredo pizza because I wanted to get a good position. That's dedication.

It was really neat to shoot an indoor event like this. It was my first time, and it was something of a learning experience. Mainly, I learned that my lens is not the right one for them. *grins* Actually, the pictures came out a lot better than expected, but I have a much better idea of what gear I'd need to do it better. In fact, as a birthday present to myself, I'm going to buy this lens for myself.

It's considerably faster than the lens I have (maximum aperture of 1.8 as opposed to 3.5) and the reviews I've looked at say that it's a surprisingly sharp lens for the price. I can live with funky bokeh due to the five-blade aperture for a lens that's that fast and that cheap. It's not a zoom, but you know, I think I like primes. It's too bad it wouldn't get here before the con.

But I did get a few nice shots. They are

A couple of little girls dressed as Hermione Granger and Cho Chang. They were an audience favorite.

A gentleman (I think) in a quite quite nice V costume.

And, the only entry in the master-level category, a character who instantly brought to mind the evil, animated doll from Final Fantasy IV; the Calcobrenna. Even without considering the costume, you could tell that this was someone who had experience in acting or pageantry. Her clockwork movements were wonderfully disturbing, and she was almost the only person who stayed in character all the way off the stage. I was impressed.

The absolute highlight of the convention? While walking around the party floor with my hair in pigtails, I was complimented on the its cuteness. I was elated! In fact, I proceeded to wear my hair in pigtails all of Sunday too. *giggles*
