stormdog: (sleep)

Though we weren't able to make it to our friend [livejournal.com profile] anarchist_nomad's party on Saturday due to lingering car issues, we celebrated our anniversary in a way that was possibly just as fitting for our relationship; we drove around Kenosha and Racine raiding garage sales and thrift stores!

Moira found a number of goodies that she talked about in her journal, and I was very excited for her! For my part, Moira actually likes me enough to have brought me out to a garage sale she'd already been to and point out a drum set to me. And was it ever a beautiful drum set! It's a vintage Pearl kit; the owner bought it new in 1971. I'm not sure, but a little internet research leads me to think that the pattern is called blue tiger. I tracked down a pictures of another set that has the same skins here. Are they not beautiful?

My set is a three piece; a bass and two toms. But it also came with a throne, some symbols, and a brand new-in-the-box high-hat stand. Considering I paid a hundred and twenty-five for the set, I can probably make back about half of that just in selling the high-hat stand, and as it happens, I already have one! (My other thought is selling the stand and hoping to get enough for a cheap set of high-hats I can put on my existing stand.) I'll need to devote some more time to the basement and make some room to play these 'cause they deserve to be heard.

The only problem is one of the has a torn skin. I emailed a drum repair place online to get a rough idea of how much I'd have to pay to get it repaired, or whether it's even possible. I hope so; these are totally my color. They'd look right at home in front of Minerva, the rocker-chick I made on my brother's copy of Rock Band.

Since I now have two basses, two floor toms, and three mounted toms, I'll have to pare down my gear. I won't get much if I sell the pieces I already has as they're pretty crappy, but we'll see. I'm planning on keeping one of the mounted toms from that set, and possibly the floor tom too. Might as well, right?

As [livejournal.com profile] serinthia pointed out earlier today, it would probably help to learn how to play these things too, at some point....

Sunday was spent with [livejournal.com profile] megmoves at faire. It was a lovely day with a lovely person! After a leisurely breakfast at Perkins (where I'd never eaten before!) we dashed off the Bristl grounds. I was happy to be among all the folk in garb. It's the same sense of being among my own that I get at sci-fi cons. It feels like home. I was saddened though, to see a few faire fixtures gone. Most notably the blacksmith who, if memory serves, was there since the times when it was King Richard's Faire. It's been a long time, that's for sure. I'd often drop by when I was there and spend an hour or so watching him work and chatting. I'll miss him.

I saw Moonie, another faire fixture for me; his show is fantastic, year after year. Meg and I watched Dirk and Guido's show; I haven't seen them perform in quite a few years. We bumped into Devin at the knife-throw booth, who gave us a round of tosses on the house. We ate cheese fritters, a guilty but undeniable pleasure for me.

We did lots of window shopping for various prettys, shinies, and garb. I looked at one of Pendragon's pieces that I've had my eye on for years. They do such beautiful work. But alas, I have one unreasonably expensive hobby already, and I couldn't help but look at the prices on the nice jerkins and doublets and consider that I could get a pretty decent lens for my camera for that amount.

We elected to pass on drum jam as it drew on past six. Meg had her bar trivia group to meet up with. I decided to head home since I had to get up at five this morning to get ready for work and make my train. On the way home though, I called my sweetie Moira and asked if she'd like to have dinner. We made Chinese buffet our evening repast. Mmmm, hot and sour soup and fried crab cakes.

When we got home, she showed me the shinies she'd worked on during the day. I'm continually amazed at the beautiful, intricate baubles she manages to put together. She really has a talent. But raccoons are good with their hands, aren't they?

Finally, it was time for bed. An option that sounds pretty good to me about now, as my train is pulling into Kenosha at the end of my (with commute) twelve and a half hour work day. *yawns*

Thanks, y'all, for being out there.

I'm hoping to start posting more general life updates here again. I was kind of quiet for a while, at least as far as personal content. But life is good and bears writing about.
