As I read through issues of Reel Journal, a 1920s film industry journal, I wonder how one does this kind of research on a limited time budget without being hugely subject to confirmation bias.
I mean, I have a picture in my head of the state of the industry from secondary sources. Now I'm looking through the primary sources for things to piece into my paper. But that's the problem; I'm looking for things that fit into the existing framework, which means that my results are going to be suspect, however pure my intentions. (And I'll be honest; after two days of working at this nonstop, my intentions lean a little more toward 'get this done' than 'be perfect' at times.)
How would you do this kind of research in an ideal world? Would you apply some kind of random sample selection technique to the issues of the magazines you're looking at? Would you do some kind of systematic qualitative analysis, like going through all the editorials from every issue and coding the text? That's a lot of work! I think I'll ask my professor and see what he says, 'cause I'm curious.

Also, on the phone tonight, Danae told me my brain is sexy. Coming from someone with a sexy brain of her own, that makes me glow.
