I'm forsaking my social Thursday to try to be productive, so I'm going to close down most everything on my computer and work. But I do have to write a bit, 'cause that's what I do.

I heard back on my public records request. They don't have most of what I want. They do have one item, but want $27.50 to go find it in the warehouse. I'll have to see if the professor I'm working with wants to budget that in our research. For being public records, these things aren't very public sometimes.

With about 4 weeks to go until my trip to Chiapas, I should probably order an extra memory card for my camera soon, as well as decide what kind of foods (trail mix, jerky, etc.) I want to pack to bring with me. I've also decided that I'm going to attend the Central States Anthropological Society conference in April. It's only a $30 registration fee, it'll be a chance for more networking, and there's a bunch of urban-focused stuff. Frustratingly, a lot of it is scheduled on the same time slot, but I'm going to see if other presenters of interesting things might be willing to meet up.

I did a big shopping trip yesterday, taking my brother Akraeveter along with. That's what took up most of my time yesterday; shopping always seems to take longer than you think it will. Plus, after biking home from the college, I had to drive back out there to pick him up. But it was worthwhile. I think I really need to give in and do my shopping by car. There are grocery stores within reasonable biking distance. Some are even pretty much on my way to school. But the prices on things that I use a lot of are so much better out at the store near the highway (which is not really in reasonable frequent biking distance) that the money is worth it.

I spent the most on groceries I ever have in one go. $61 is not a lot as things go, but even when I was living with my ex, I was really only buying for me, and usually not a lot of stuff. As well as my usual staples, I decided to have something different for dinner; I bought a bag of frozen onion and cheddar pierogies, as well as some aged swiss to grate on top of them. That was tasty!

Hmm. I felt like I had more interesting things to say, but they're not coming to mind.

The weather has been tough this week. I wouldn't mind the cold so much. If it was just cold on a still day, I might not even notice that much. But the wind! For two days now, it's been a strong west wind, which makes the last leg of my commute pretty brutal. I still feel a bit chilly. Tomorrow it's supposed to be from the south, which will at least make my morning trip easier.

At school yesterday, I'd parked my bike in the basement outside the archives as I do when I happen to forget the key to my U-lock. While I was microwaving something, I heard a tremendous, but high-pitched, bang. A coworker came to make sure I was unhurt and find out what had happened. I didn't know at first, but shortly realized it was my front tire. I'd filled it up to the full 100 psi that morning, so when I brought it in from the cold it must have been over pressured. Still, when the archivist did the calculations, she determined it would only have been around 113 psi. I'm surprised that was enough to pop it. But pop it did; it split wide open for about six inches down a seam. Fortunately I had a spare tube with me. Though it took me a little bit to figure out how to reset my frame pump for presta valves, I got things all set for my ride home.

I also got online and ordered two more spare tubes, and a new tire for the front. I have a newer puncture resistant tire on the back, but the front one is of a more ordinary sort and has about 1200 or 1300 miles on it, so it was time. The Bontrager Race Lite Hardcase that I got on sale for the rear is no longer available, and the new model has tread that I don't like as much. I decided to give a Continental Gatorskin a try. It'll be interesting having both of them, since they seem to be two of the best known puncture-resistant commuter bike tires. Maybe I can see which holds up better. Or maybe it doesn't matter, since they've redesigned the Bontrager ones anyway....
