stormdog: (sleep)

I picked up the Spanish copy of Zorro that [livejournal.com profile] lisagems gave me when I was taking classes and opened it to a random page. I could make out the gist of several sentences. I'm learning this language! I've finally reached past and future tenses in Rosetta Stone, which I'm about to dig into for my half hour daily lesson.

I just finished with a tutorial for ArcGIS that taught me how to create point, line, and polygon features. It took longer than it might have because I had to figure out how to open and use the tutorial itself! I also made notes on the first couple of chapters of the textbook for the GIS class. There's a lot of discussion of maps as power embodied into knowledge a la Foucault, a brief discussion of cross-cultural perception of images, and just a general post-modern bent. I dig it.

When I arrived at my first class of the day, I learned we were having our midterm exam. I've been so distracted with other stuff that I'd forgotten. Fortunately, I don't have to worry overmuch about Dr. S' exams, and it went well. In fact, I finished up and got an early start on my running around.

I decided to drive over to the municipal building to pick up a copy of a common council resolution, which is apparently the only document in my list that is still extant. A copy of the page cost me $27.01, which Dr. G had given me some cash to cover as part of our research. There wasn't as much as I was hoping, but it does offer a little insight into city motivation for the project. I again wish there was more context, and that I had access to another document referenced there.

I did a lot of running around today. I was at the municipal building early, so the head of public works, who I'd corresponded with in email, was in a meeting. I drove back to school thinking that my appointment with him was at 12:30. Checking the computer once I got back, I realized that I'd talked about 11:30 to 12:00, so I went back out to my car. I arrived around noon and met the director, who had a couple of folders worth of material for me to look at. The majority may not be relevant to my purposes, but there is some good stuff in there. I'm going back on Friday with a portable scanner to make some copies.

Then I went back to the school just in time to get some food at the tail end of the Mardi Gras party the library was having for staff and students. Muffalata, jambalaya, king cake, pralines, and more. It was a big, tasty lunch!

I went to my second class, then down to the archives to work, then drove my brother T home. I'd taken my car since it was going to be a busy travel day.

I'd been planning to visit [livejournal.com profile] posicat tomorrow evening, but I passed Dr. G in the hall on the way to my car who reminded me about a meeting of the Pike River Restoration group we're going to. I would have realized once I looked at my calendar, but I appreciated the earlier reminder. I also bumped into one of the students I'm going to Chiapas with, who told me that our fundraising chocolate had arrived. I'd seen that in email earlier and emailed the professor earlier in the day, but with that nudge I figured I'd go up and see if she was around. She wasn't; I'll get it tomorrow.

Does anybody want to buy some chocolate bars? *grins* (I'll write a bit more about that in another post.)

It's still shaping up to be a busy weekend. There's *so* much microfilm to go through on this Pike Creek project. And Dr. G is talking about setting up a meeting with the former archivist of the Kenosha News to talk about the project too. She sounds like a very valuable source of information!
