It was a dark blue morning when I boarded the plane bound for southern Mexico. Snow drifted down from the slowly lightening sky, collecting in cotton-balls on the wing.

The ground crew had to deice our plane before we began taxiing toward the runway. I have to admit, after having heard so many stories about planes having trouble due to ice accumulation, I was a little nervous.

But the sky reflected beautifully in the cleared wing raised my spirits. And even as I thought off and on about the symbolism of the airline's Aztec logo and whether it was an example of cultural appropriation, the fact that ancient people have a power and authority that carries into the present day to inscribe itself upon the vehicle that I would be travelling in was a little bit reassuring.

The breaking storm light painted the surroundings in vivid light as we neared our departure. I took it as a good omen.

And then, we were off!
I hadn't been in a plane for something like twenty years. It was excited and scary and exhilarating, and the excitement won out over the other two as I continually looked back and forth out windows and around the cabin, listening to the sounds of the engines, and watching the tips of the wings rock up and down in the outside air.
