I wrote this earlier today, but Livejournal wasn't letting me post it.

I got another chunk of my history mid-term done. My reward was a walk over to Chester's, the local electronics supply store, to pick up a fan for my computer.

I run BOINC, a distributed computing client that lets my computer work on math for projects like the Large Hadron Collider or World Community Grid's HIV or cancer research. I'd been limiting it to using 80% of my processor because the CPU temperature was getting too high. But there were two empty spots on the case for 120mm fans, so I decided to add one in the position blowing right on the CPU.

The fans at Chesters just have bare wire leads, so I bought a fan and the correct Molex connector for the wiring. It was an easy crimp-on connection and I got everything set up pretty easily. I turned everything on and cranked BOINC up to 100% CPU usage, and the temperature hovered around 71 Celsius, a good fifteen to twenty degrees cooler. Nice!

However. This fan is *not* kidding around. It's a two wire lead, so it can't adjust speed. It's on or it's off. And it's *loud*. I guess that's what I get for buying a generic fan and wiring it in instead of buying a computer-specific fan. And here I thought I was being cool and geeky.

Maybe if I move the thing under my desk again where the old computer was it will be better. I'll play around with it later. For now, I disconnected the fan and am going to start on writing up a book review.

And later:

I read somewhere that new heat transfer paste on a CPU may need some extended run time to 'bed in,' so after turning the fan off I brought BOINC back up to 100% again and watched the temperature for a while. It's hanging out around 74C. Hardly much difference at all. I guess that's good, except that I kind of wasted $20 on this fan hardware, which is a little frustrating. It might be helpful in the summer at least, when it gets so warm up here.

---

And yet later:

And now, after an hour or so, we're up to about 80C. Maybe it's a problem after all.

========

Eh, whatever. I just got back from Chinese buffet with my brothers and am ready ready to do more work. Despite stress earlier on, this has been a good, productive day so far.
