I so badly wish I had a job that started at a reasonable hour, like 9:00, instead of at 7:00. I wouldn't even sleep the full two hours extra. I could get just an hour and a half more sleep, get up at 7:00, and be well rested and have plenty of time to get ready and out the door. *sigh* Remember, my dear readers, that factory work really does rather suck.

On the other hand, though I have to encase my hindpaws in theses strange rubber and leather devices before leaving for work, I still get the satisfaction of knowing that, underneath it all, I have pretty hind paws. [livejournal.com profile] wooisme painted them yesterday with polish that we picked out when visiting the yuppie mall just for fun. They're dark blue and sparkly! Then I painted hers for her, a dark purple. *sleepy smile* Dear one, I hope you read this before you leave for work yourself. I love you with all my heart...

An issue I've had cause to give some thought to lately;

I have heard the word 'faggot' used by people as a general sort of insult, akin to 'jerk' or 'asshole'. That raises some troubling issues for me. Specifically, I am concerned by the disassociation of 'faggot' from a homophobic context.

To the general populace, faggot overwhelmingly is a term applied to gay people, usually men. Just as overwhelmingly, it is seen to carry such a negative connotation that, in polite company so to speak, the term is used with a rarity approaching that of terms like 'nigger' or 'wop'. In fact, I posit that faggot's generally percieved meaning, an insultingly derogatory term for gay men, is essentially inseperable from the term itself in whatever context it is used. I fear that the more and more common use of 'faggot' simply builds tolerance for verbal attacks against the gay community, no matter how the use of the term was actually intended.

Apart from that, there are many, many more sufficiently insulting terms that should do the job just as well as faggot. Unless, of course, faggot gains a certain power from it's association with it's roots in discrimination and homophobia, in which case it's really not just another slanderous, but non-homophobic, term, is it?

I'd be very interested in opinions on this.

My betrothed (I can say that now!) and I watched ghost world a few nights ago and, apart from it being a really good movie, I got really pulled in by Seymore's love of old music and old records. Tonight, inspired by the movie, I broke the shrink wrap on my sweetie's Louis Armstrong box set and put a CD in. Why didn't I ever listen to that sort of stuff before? It's really good.

Then, I walked into geekland, looked her in the eye, took her hands, and pulled her out into the living room where we danced to Satchmo's jazz. I have this amazing grin on my face thinking about it.

This has been such a wonderful day altogether! I came home from work to find my star already home, waiting for me. This afternoon and evening we've spent some wonderful time together. We've puttered around the house, done ebay, she made me a wonderful dinner... Were a dog able to, I'd curl up and purr.
